A volcano is remembered by the shape of its mountain, but most of the work happens under the ground. The line running across the middle of the cross-section is the ground surface, and everything below it is underground. Five layers of equal thickness are stacked there, and the roof of the magma chamber lies about two and a half layers down. The layers are a depth scale you can count.
