EV Powertrain: How Electricity Turns the Wheels

Trace energy from the underfloor battery through the inverter, motor, reduction gear, differential, and tires, running forward under acceleration and backward under regeneration, then compare where the same 100 units of onboard energy go in an EV versus a gasoline car.

Prologue · 1/8

It starts not under the hood, but under the floor

See through the body and the centre of energy is the thin battery pack under the floor. Near the rear wheels, an Electric Drive Unit integrating the inverter, motor, and single-speed reduction gear. The orange high-voltage system and the silver mechanical system connect over a short path. First, turn the whole car and see how the space is used where there is no large conventional engine or exhaust pipe.

Find the under-floor battery and the rear drive unit, and follow the orange high-voltage path connecting them.
